There is often a beautiful sunset while waiting for the starlings to arrive at their roost in RSPB Ham Wall. After the sun had dropped below the horizon the birds started to arrive through the golden sunset.
I had hoped the birds moved from Loxtons to Waltons so I headed for the Tor View hide in the middle of the read bed. It was like a rugby scrum in the hide trying to get a view passed all those heads and shoulders. But it was worth it for be fantastic display.
High in the sky the large flocks circled around the hide before dropping down into the reed bed just to the south.
The starlings funnel down into the same spot.
As expected the birds did not settle as they repeatedly lifted out the reeds in waves moving across the Waltons Heath.
Gradually, as it got darker the birds spread out amongst the reed in front of Glastonbury Tor.
