New years day really was an excellent day for Starling watching on the Avalon Marshes. The sky above Shapwick Heath was beautiful. Those watching from the western end of the reserve were beginning to think the birds were not going to arrive. The first few groups flew towards the Decoy Hide, but each group turned in the air above the hide and headed deep into the reserve. But eventually the birds began to arrive…
Soon the sunset was blocked out by black clouds containing huge numbers of birds.
Gradually the birds descended into the reedbed only 50 yards from the reserve path.
The birds descended into a line of scrub. They flew from tree to tree before settling to roost for the night.
