Car-Wash Corner

White Admiral (Limenitis camilla) – Shapwick Heath, Somerset, UK. ID JB4_6885.  My son and I nicknamed a sunny glade at Shapwick Heath – Car-Wash Corner. The name came about because the day we first found this spot it was full of Silver-wash Fritilaries – in those days when we put our car through the local car wash we always used the silver wash. Obviously we were not the first to find this corner. Since then we have returned several times and regularly meet other butterfly enthusiasts.  A second pair of eyes looking out for Purple Hairstreaks high up in the Oak trees comes in very handy.

This White Admiral visited the bramble bushes each time the sun came out from behind the clouds.  After a second look I realised that half the lower wing was missing.  This explained why it was slow enough for me to photograph and by exposed the upper surface of the wing made this a more interesting picture .

Earlier in the morning, before the weather had brightened up, another White Admiral was sheltering under bracken. It remained there for a long time – well after the local Red Admirals and Silver-Washes were feeding on the brambles.
