Snowdrops mark the beginning of the end of winter and signal that spring is around the corner. This year I missed a number of opportunities to photograph snowdrops in Somerset’s valleys. So I have been on the lookout for snowdrops that have not yet faded.
These snowdrops were growing in a hedgerow protected from the worst of the weather and morning frosts. I could see them as I drove home an luckily they could be reached via a footpath that crossed a field.
The hedgerow is near Holton in South Somerset. Its is a small village with a church and a pub. At the top on the hill is Holton Cross which is one of my favourite locations for spring flowers such as primroses. Favourite because I never expected spring flowers to grow so well on banks next to a busy road.
Getting down low to photograph the flowers from their view point.
Some of the flowers were beginning to brown at the tips of their petals. I had to select each group carefully. I did not want to prune flowers just because I did not like them in my picture.
