I took half day’s leave from work so I could head across to Shapwick Heath to catch the starlings returning to their overnight roost.
The birds had moved from Ham Wall a week before. I was not sure where the birds had been roosting so I joined the crowd on the main track. This raised path has lots of open views across the Roughet area of the reserve.
One Big Starling
Things were not going well. The sky was beautiful but the birds were just drifting slowly around. Then in a magical 30 seconds they went through a repertoire of wonderful patterns.
My favourite being their interpretation of an enormous starling. How thousands of birds got themselves organised to make this shape is amazing!
The birds seemed to change their minds, moving the roost site from the Roughet to the being the Sweet Track. In the process the birds twisted into these patterns.
Before the flock dropped into the reeds they formed an incredibly dense flock.
