Mells Snowdrops
Snowdrops of Wadbury Valley
In the steep wooded valley that leads east of the village of Mells are some of my favourite snowdrop sites.
The best spot can be found on a raised platform just after the old iron works. The works is currently fenced off and includes the wreck of an old car. This location is not as good as it once was due to fallen trees covering much of the ground – but its still excellent.
There has been a lot of clearing of scrub near the entrance to Wadbury Valley giving better views of the snowdrops there.
Just a few minutes of light before the sun drops below the steep sides of the valley. Do not visit too late in the afternoon – aim to be there for midday.
I often find lots of tiny spiders around snowdrops. Not sure why.
I visit Mells most years to see the snowdrops: 2019, 2018, 2017 and more.
And Finally…
I do like a road-sign finger post. It is 2 ¾ miles from Mells to the village of Leigh-on-Mendip.
Now it is only ¼ of a mile to Leigh-on-Mendip and the snowdrops are back!
