Beacon Hill Wood is a special place in autumn.  Golden beach leaves cover the woodland floor providing nutrients for the host of colourful fungi.

It is hard to find fungi in perfect condition.  So many have been nibbled by squirrels, stepped on by walkers or bitten by dogs.

The Woodland Floor

I think everyone loves a pristine woodland floor.  Moss and leaves in spools of sun light that slipped through the maize of trees above.

The floor is the place for mini beasts – looking for any advantage.

Autumn Mist

It is not always sunny in the UK.  But mist adds another dimension to the woodland.

Dampled Sunlight

But a clear sunny day is probably most people’s favourite.  The woodland was once ploughed into a series of ridges.  The tops are covered in moss the hollows are wet and soggy.

Carpets of Leaves

Beach leaves are tough and full of colour.  Perfect carpet material.

Logs

Logs that were once stacked with care now gradually decompose.

And Finally…

This wood has a secret stone at its heart.  The wood contains a group of ancient round borrows.  At the centre of one is this standing stone.
