Moor Pylons
Starlings collect on the pylons near Westhay soon after leaving their roost site at RSPB Ham Wall.
Westhay Pylons
I don’t think I like pylons, in nearly all my pictures I have tried hard to keep them out. This can be difficult on the Somerset Levels which is crossed by several lines taking power from Hinkley Point power station.
It was time for a change and try to find some beauty in these metal structures. I spent four cold mornings visiting the pylons near the village of Westhay near the River Brue.
From the footpaths that criss-cross the moor you can get close to the pylons.
On the left is a pylon which I normal exclude from my pictures, and on the right is Glastonbury Tor which I often try to include in my pictures. The sky is so colourful it could make anything look good.
Even though it is sometimes too early in the morning, dawn is still my favourite time of day.
Starling Murmurations
Each morning large flocks of starlings flew over, and under, the cables. If you look closely, and you can see in the distance there are thousands more birds making the crossing.
The flocks start early and continue well passed sunrise.
Sunrise
The sunrise from the Main Road at Westhay. If only all views from a main road were like this.
And finally…
A wedge of swans fly in low each morning to form a bevy in this field next to Westhay Bridge.
