Butleigh Cross
Number 36 on the Ann Heeley Hertitage Trail is the Butleigh Cross War Memorial. Butleigh is a small village just south of Glastonbury in Somerset.
As the First World War ended, it was decided in Butleigh that the wayside cross on Butleigh Hill should be made into a ware memorial. It was restored to about twenty feet high and on the stem, a figure of St Leonard, the patron saint of Butleigh was placed and a figure of Christ on the top of the cross. – The trail plaque found near the cross
The top of the hill has views stretching across the Somerset countryside. Below a red-legged partridge strolls down Banbury Lane. While the morning sun struggles against a bank of low cloud.
The fields have already turned yellow with oilseed rape.
The spire of Kingweston church points to the moon.
All these picture were captured within a few yards of the War Memorial on a beautiful spring morning.
Sadly the Ann Heeley Heritage Trail website is no longer up and running. However, you can start the trail at the village centre near the shop, take a few pictures of the notice boards next to the green so you can follow the trial around the village and countryside.
