Windmill Hill to Glastonbury Tor
Running along the southern edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset is the A39 main road. I’m not sure it is a real main road as it is very narrow in several places.
There are stretches between Wells and Cheddar that make me think this is coast road. It feels like it runs along the top of a sea cliff, with the flat Somerset Levels being the sea. If sea levels rise then maybe this would become a proper coast road.
From this road there are a series of view points where you can pull over and look across the sea towards Glastonbury Tor. In front of the Tor are a group of small hills, or islands.
I returned to the same point near Westbury-sub-Mendip to capture the Tor behind Windmill Hill, Chalcroft Hill, the twin peaks of Knowle Hill and Yarley Hill.
It was still dark when I arrived each morning.
It was late March but we were going through another cold snap with morning temperatures below freezing. I was hoping for a layer of mist over the levels, but it did not happen.
The mist would have created a sea to add my imaginary coastal appeal of this view. However, instead we had white frost covered the low ground between the island hills. This shines as it is hit by the first rays of the morning sun.
I made several visits over a week or two but the mist refused to come out. I will need wait and try again in the autumn. In the meantime I still think this a beautiful spot from which to watch the dawn.
And finally…
All along the coast road are a series of view points to the Glastonbury Tor. This is another of my favourites, from the road bridge at the village of Easton the Tor appears in a narrow gap between the hills.
