Uphill Beacon
Next to the village of Uphill in North Somerset there is a hill you can go up. Surprisingly, it seems the village is not named after the hill. Anyway, the hill is a beautiful spot and a local nature reserve.
I arrived at the top of the hill very early. In fact, so early I had time to photograph a sky full of stars.
Beacon Tower
At the top of the hill, not far from the more famous old church, is the beacon tower. It shines out across the Bristol Channel to celebrate each new year’s eve, as well as big occasions.
Soon the sun, still below the eastern horizon, began to turn the clouds orange and pink.
The colours quickly fade in the morning. But as they all seemed to shine out from the beacon tower they were no less fascinating.
I included this picture in my post from my Autumn Equinox weekend. It illustrates the impact aircraft have on our skies.
Eventually, the sun appears casting its golden rays low across the grassland.
And finally…
Getting in the best position to catch the raising sun is key for dawn photography. Things happen quicker than you may think. There are lots of phone apps that can help with this – my favourite is Sun Seeker. I like the 3D view which shows you the path the sun will take.
