Deerleap Sunrise
Dawn over the hills surrounding the small city of Wells in Somerset. Taken from the steep hill of Deerleap on the edge of the Mendip Hills. This spot has fabulous wide open views across the county.
Deerleap Dawn
Before the sun appears a gold and red sky sits over the distant hills. The air was not as clear as hoped but the soft light did have its own beauty.
Soon the sun shines down on the city of Wells. In the centre is the tower of St Cuthbert’s Church, not the cathedral.
Just a small turn of my tripod head is the solitary chimney of St Cuthbert’s mill. The mill creates high quality paper made using the clear pure water that emerges from the caves at Wookey Hole that has filtered through the limestone rocks of the Mendip Hills.
Looking south towards Glastonbury Tor. This is probably Somerset’s most famous landscape.
Behind, in the golden dawn light, is Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Lynchcombe nature reserve. In the far distance is Crook Peak.
I watched out for flocks of starlings spreading out across the countryside after spending the night in their roost at RSPB Ham Wall.
And Finally...
Dropping down the road for a closer view of St Cuthbert’s Church. Sadly recent clearing of trees, needed due to ash dieback, has opened new views across Wells.
