New Cut
The words new cut brings images to mind of motorways crossing a hillside. However, this is not the case in Wells. Here the New Cut appears to be an ancient track up the steep southern edge of the Mendip Hills.
The cut reminds me of Hell Lane in Dorset, or Hollow Lane at Montacute, as the track is cut deep into the earth with steep sides.
This time of year is is covered in wild garlic. Due to the shade this is some of the last garlic to flower.
As you walk up the track it gradually levels out and the woodland gets wider.
