Blackford

First, just so there is no confusion… of the three villages called Blackford in Somerset, this is the one in South Somerset.  In the grounds of the beautiful Church of St Michael the annual display of snowdrops is something to look forward to.   They are often the first snowdrops to show in the area.

Initially, according to social media, it seemed snowdrops were early this year with flowers appears appearing before Christmas.  Now it seems they are really late.  Strange that social media should be so unreliable.

In most years the west end of the churchyard is covered in flowers, today there was only a handful.

Snowdrops

It was very cold today, so those few were probably regretting their decision.

The frost makes them look beautiful.  You should not put snow in your name if you are not able to cope with a bit of frost.

When the cold hits they curl up into a ball.  The frost often burns the tips of the petals, so its probably a good thing that the are still protected in the ground.
