Wood Anemones
It must be true that the sight of spring flowers bring joy to everyone. Well not everywhere has seasons like we have in the UK. So it is probably not true for everyone. But it must be true to nearly everyone in Somerset.
Each flower has it first location of the year. The year starts with snowdrops in Blackford, then primroses in Chilton Polden, daffodils in Penselwood, crocus in Forde Abbey the list goes on. But the true stars of spring are wood anemones.
They literally are the stars of the woodland space.
Park Wood near Wells is the perfect place to see wood anemones.
They cover every corner of the small wood.
To find the wood follow the cycle track out of Wells, towards Shepton Mallet, on what was once the old railway. I few hundred yards up the track turn left up the slope. From here you cannot avoid the sea of stars.
I love the soft white of these delicate little flowers. They appear in late March and disappear after about a month. In fact they disappear so completely that you would hardly know they are there – waiting once again for next spring!
And finally…
In the slightest breeze their heads wobble about, so you need to wait for gaps in the wind before taking your photographs.
