Starling Trail

When you visit the Avalon Marshes to see the Starlings as often as I do people look to you for guidance.  I really enjoy helping people find the best location to see the birds.  Along with this comes a sense of responsibility – have I given them the best advice?

Today was one of those days.  We had some friends to stay and when I told them how good the Starlings were at their roost site in Ham Wall they were very keen to follow me that evening.  The problem was last time I took them we saw no birds!

Today was a complete turn around.  We headed for the new Avalon Hide in the Waltons and waited.  I’m always there too early, so we were all there too early!  But the birds roost in the west Walton reedbed right infant of the hide.  Then as it was getting dark they poured over the path into east Walton.  They flew over the path just above our heads.  A great evening.
