Withial Combe
Withal Combe is a Somerset Wildlife Trust. I’ve just visited it for the first time as part of the daily commute series. Unlike the grasslands of Whitefield, Babcary and Perry Mead this reserve also has a secret steep sided woodland ravine.
Of course, there are some meadows for which this time of year is perfect. I will need to return in the spring to capture the woodland floor which will hopefully put on a good display of Wild Garlic. Only a few lingering bits of garlic remained today.
On the way to the combe I had to wait while cows crossed the road. This has given me the idea for a new project – Cattle Crossings. A tour of the the roads and lanes of Somerset shared with cows. I frequently use roads used by farmers, but the tricky bit will be timing and getting permission to photograph people doing their work. I normally avoid taking pictures of people as sometimes this can cause offence. However, with this hobby it is important to build good relationships with farmers and land owners.
