Babcary Flowers and Butterflies

Babcary is a small packet of wonderful flowers and wildlife deep in the middle of Somerset. It is managed by the Somerset Wildlife Trust. I often pass Babcary on my daily commute by car, or sometimes bicycle.  Today I had a free hour before I needed to get home.

Meadows

The small group of fields that make up Babcary Meadows are at their best – full or buttercups, butterflies, orchids an deer.

The last (third) field is a hidden gem.  I nearly missed it but was advised by a local to return as they showed me their pictures on an iPhone.  I’m very glad I was persuaded to return – making me a bit late home.

While sitting in the shadow of a hedge this Roe Deer passed by.  At this spot he was looking straight towards me – did he see me.  Eventually, it leapt away through the hole in the hedge in the background.

Butterflies

Orange-tips love country lanes, hedgerows, riverbanks and damp meadows – so they must love Babcary in Somerset.  Babcary provides many Cuckoo Flowers one of their favourites.

These butterflies follow the lines of the hedgerows in repeating loops.  So no need to chase after them, instead sit down and wait and they will come to you.

A male orange-tip flutters around the female.  Distracted this is the perfect time to get a few photographs.
