Lynchcombe Steps

Autumn has started at Lynchcombe.  Colours are turning and many berries are out, or like sloes are already over.  At the top of the reserve the sycamore trees are turning brown.

Bracken tends to cover the reserve and is frequently cut back.  But when backlit in autumn it provides some great colours.

Comma butterflies (Polygonia c-album) are the colour or autumn and still active.   They are particularly slow and so relatively easy to photograph.

Red Admirals (Vanessa atalanta) prefer to be high up on in the trees.  Feeding on the ivy flowers allows it to be one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter.  It can be seen on sunny days during autumn.

And finally…

In contrast the days of the Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria) butterflies are numbered.  This one hanging on despite missing one of its wings.
