As March arrives the skylarks return to the Mendip Hills and immediately start fighting.

The birds return close to their birthplace and fight over territories.  And you can see why as this is a beautiful spot high on the Mendip Hills in Somerset.  Long grass in fields separated by dry-stone walls with wide open views across half of Somerset.

Only a passing red kite forced the skylarks to call a halt to the fighting.

How the birds have the energy to keep flying, fighting and singing for so long is amazing.

It is not surprising they take time for a rest on posts, trees and even on the ground.

It is surprising how these ground nesting birds manage to stay safe.
