Church of St Cuthbert

I have photographed the Church of St Cuthbert in Wells from high up on Deerleap many times. Each spring this church puts on a display of daffodils so today it was time to get up close.

The flowers have been planted in regimental rows. I’ve assumed this is so the lawnmower can get between the lines of flowers. May be, may be not, but the regime can be broken if you view from the front and get down low. Its a fabulous display and signals the arrival of spring and the hope of warm days to come.

The church looks at its best in the early evening when the warm light on the tower is the perfect match for its stonework. Timing is key because as the sun drops the daffodils get hit by the long shadows that quickly draw across the churchyard.

This direct sunlight can be a little harsh.  So for the close-ups of the flowers I came a few days earlier when the cloud cover formed a giant soft-box.

This church is famous for its roll in the film Hot Fuzz!
